Motivation to Teach Social Action:
As a teacher-scholar, my pedagogy focuses on empowering students through active learning and project-based assignments to change transformational learning experiences. My own research focuses on social change, race, class, and gender and digital media studies. Working with students on social action campaigns, reflects my pedagogy, research, and personal interests to make a positive impact int he world through teaching, research and service. Specifically, implementing a social action campaign combines active learning while allowing students to pursue topics they care about. This institute provides me the tools and knowledge to implement a campaign in a classroom context. This would be ideal for my Stories of Change: Social Movements course I'm teaching in the Spring 2025. In the class we read about the success, failure, and tactics of social movement organizations and protests, such as different waves of feminist movements, Sunrise Movement, Rainbow Coalition. It would be ideal to apply what we are learning to a social action campaign for students to have a meaningful learning experience. I also regularly teach Social Problems , which would also be easy to facilitate a social action campaign around a social problem of their choosing. In the long term, I aim to develop community-engaged research methods course. This program's reflect my own interest in community engagement for sociology courses I am teaching.
Course Description:
Students will explore the dynamics of historical and contemporary social movements, examining social change agents, significant events, and how change unfolds over time. Through the study of sociological theories, case studies, and their application to real-world scenarios, students will analyze the goals, tactics, and outcomes of movements both in the U.S. and internationally. The course aims to foster a critical understanding of social change, the persistence of systemic oppression, and the strategies employed to address injustices.
