Students Against Mass Incarceration (SAMI)

Students Against Mass Incarceration (SAMI)

Demands

  1. Reallocate the $747 million for Santa Clara County's new main jail towards mental health & re-entry services.
  2. The County creates a 10-digit phone line for TRUST (a non-law enforcement mental health crisis line), which is separate from the county's mental health service 9-8-8 hotline.

Target

Otto Lee, County Board Supervisor

Status: Won

3/20/24 - Students Against Mass Incarceration was one of the longest running campaigns in Social Action, as it was “activated” by at least three students each semester from 2018-2023. SAMI won their demand to get the County to clear the records of marijuana records, they helped to stop, at least for the present, the building of the new jail by Santa Clara County, and helped in the effort to develop a mental hotline number that did not go directly to the police.
