Motivation to Teach Social Action:

I am interested in participating in this course development program because it offers the opportunity to collaborate with and support fellow faculty while deepening my own practice in developing socially conscious and justice-oriented curriculum. I am committed to integrating social justice frameworks into teaching, fostering critical thinking, and creating learning experiences that connect academic concepts to real-world change. This program will allow me to both contribute my expertise and grow through interdisciplinary exchange, ultimately enriching the impact of my courses and the communities they serve.

Course Description:

This introductory course explores the question “What is art?” through the study of its history, functions, and cultural significance. Students will engage with major works from diverse periods and traditions while developing skills in visual analysis, art criticism, and historical interpretation. The class examines techniques, materials, and the formal elements and principles of design, providing a foundation for understanding both Western and global art traditions. Through lectures, discussions, museum visits, and writing assignments, students will sharpen their critical thinking, broaden their cultural perspective, and deepen their appreciation for the role of art in human civilization.
