Motivation to Teach Social Action:
I currently teach Introduction to Labor Studies: Labor & Society. As part of an ongoing course redesign, I am integrating a deeper emphasis on social action—encouraging students to critically engage with and explore pathways for advocacy, community organizing, and transformative change.
Course Description:
The purpose of the Introduction course is to provide students with a foundational understanding of the complex and dynamic relationship between labor and the historical, cultural, political, social, economic, and structural dimensions of society in the contemporary United States. Labor Studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines work, the workplace, workers, and their organizations. It draws from the fields of history, economics, industrial relations, political science, law, sociology, communication, and philosophy, as well as other disciplines. As an academic discipline, Labor Studies educates workers and future workers to strengthen the labor movement and provide a richer understanding of its functions in society.
