Course Description:
Students will study the impact of poverty and inequality, across rural and urban America, on children, including neurological, cognitive, physical, and socio-emotional development. We will explore how various contributing factors interact, including family life, discrimination, education, community violence, and incarceration. Outcomes of poverty and inequality, such as academic achievement, mental and physical health, and trauma, will be examined. Students will also consider the interplay of developmental research, community resources, and public policy, throughout firsthand experiences collaborating with community agencies and working with vulnerable children and families.
